95 Horatio Street

Did you know that The West Coast Apartments at 95 Horatio street, which stretch the entire block from Horatio to Gansevoort and Washington to West, are built on the site of the Manhattan Refrigerating Company – this photo from the 1930′s. The building was converted in the 80′s. Cool history, huh?
The lot is 54,360sq. feet (wowsa!), and the apartment complex is ten stories, with 272 residential units. HOLY TAMALES!
PS – I want mad props for my research. Because I know you all were dying to know how many units were in the building!

I’ve lived at 95 since 1983 . . . and it’s changed a lot. I heard there were 285 apts. Also, when I first moved here the High-line was still a part of the bldg and there was a pkg lot btwn Horatio & Jane on Washington (with the High Line over it thru to Westbeth). I think the High Line was taken down between Bethune and Gansevoort as a long-term plan by Rockrose so that they could build the new apt bldg and also put 33 more apts at 95. FYI, they never up-graded the laundry room after adding that many more apts!! The Horatio St Association used to be a power to reckon with in the 80′s but with the transient population that has moved in (& the decine of drugs and transvestite prostitutes), it has become a shell of what it used to be. The oldest member that I know of is Frank Jennings (at 45 Horatio) who turned 92 this year! It’s been great living on this street (that Harry Chapin lived on in his early years). I miss Astray Cafe and many neighbors who have moved on . . .
If you know of anyone renting out a 1 or 2 bed apt in 95 Horatio, pls could you let me know. 1 646 465 4927 or liannehack@gmail.com
I was a leasing agent when 95 Horatio Street first opened. I love that building! I rented to many Celebrtities at the time. We would have Resident Parties- it was a lot of fun! I don’t know if anyone is still there from the opening but my name was Georgette George-Miller!
Those were the good old days! What a beautiful place almost every layout was just a little unique!
I live in Florida now and love it but I will always miss NYC!
