Village Living in the Big City

Horatio Street residents have perfected the art of small village life smack in the middle of the most exciting city on earth. We plant our street treewells together, greet our mailman by name, ask after our neighbor’s children when we meet on the street, and gossip ferociously from the stoops about renovations, upcoming festivals and the parking situation… And, once every few weeks, summoned by a tinkling bell, we rush (er, walk quickly) outside, kitchen shears and chef’s knifes in hand, to catch Mike’s Sharpening Services Truck as it slowly meanders through our neighborhood.

Next time I visit my family in Tennessee and am asked how in the world I can handle living in such an anonymous, large, bustling city, I’ll think of Mike’s, smile and respond “Oh, I rather enjoy the pace of my neighborhood”…
