Big Projects
The Cobblestones Return
Well, the re-construction of Gansevoort Street and Seravalli program is obviously a big embarrassing mess, nonetheless, it is nice to see that one promise is being kept: the cobblestones are being returned to their rightful place on Gansevoort Street, and the craftsmen are doing a beautiful job placing them just so. Welcome back cobblestones! »
The Highline Opens
Monday, the Highline opened to the public, and I managed to sneak my way up there on Monday night. And oh folks, I’m feeling so happy to have this odd little slice of park right out our backdoor! For now, the only entrance is on Gansevoort street. Go on up, bring a book and... »
Seravalli Park Update
The DEP was supposed to have finished their work within 18 months of starting. Clearly this has not happened. There was a lot of discussion about when they actually started so they are anywhere from 2 years to 5 years late. In any event, they will be finished this portion of the work by... »

via GVSHP: New Hearing on MTA ‘Emergency Ventilation Plant’ Project for Mulry Sq., 7th & Greenwich Ave.: The MTA’s plans to construct an emergency ventilation plant at this busy intersection has drawn great criticism from GVSHP and many others. The site is immediately adjacent to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where another large multi-year construction project... »
Mulry Square Ventilation Plant Comments Deadline
As we know from our neighbors on 13th Street, a ventilation plant installation by the MTA is no small project. That location took 6 years of construction and a heavy toll on the nearby buildings and residents from the traffic congestion and disruptive construction work. And now, the MTA is looking at building a... »
Seravalli Playground Redesign Report
So here’s the skinny: Since our community playground, Seravalli Park, won the lottery as a host for the 5 year dig to create Shaft 27B of Water Tunnel 3 (ooh, I’m so smart and technical), we get 2 MILLION dolllars to rebuild the park after the water tunnel shaft is complete. Whenever that may... »
May 9-19 HighLine Festival – Oh, David Bowie
Ever since I saw David Bowie in Labyrinth, back in 1986, well, I’ve been a little obsessed. So, when I found out he was ‘curating’ the first annual High Line Festival, I went gaga with excitement. But now, I have to admit I’m confused. The H&M Highline Festival, which bills itself as a new... »

Highline Railbanked
The High Line is railbanked, ensuring its future as a public park. “Railbanking the High Line was our most important goal when we started Friends of the High Lines in 1999, and now that huge advance has been accomplished, thanks to the successful completion of the Trail Use Agreement and transfer of ownership from... »

REMEMBER 848 Washington at West 13th and Washington in the Meat Market? Several years ago a 32 story residential Tower (Jean Nouvel architect) was being planned at this site but the project was defeated by the community. Residents Write In – Is it still noisy?
So, what with my crazy work schedule, whenever i’m around, so is the construction crew for watershaft 27b, making it a bit difficult to figure out just where the various noises are coming from. If it weren’t so awful, I’d have to laugh at the irony that the noise from the DEP-sanctioned construction site... »
